Devon and Cornwall Police warn of Raves and advise what to do

On Monday 19th December 2022, Devon and Cornwall Police issued an Alert covering Rave information and reporting –

Devon & Cornwall Police is working with both partners and local residents to make potential locations in the counties unattractive to organisers of raves (also called unlicensed music events or UMEs).

Christmas sees a increase in the possibility of a rave in Devon and Cornwall with Boxing day and New Year’s Eve in particular being attractive dates.

Uniformed and plain clothes officers are regularly patrolling areas which have been identified as possible targets of rave organisers and officers are also working with farmers and landowners to secure sites and make them unsuitable locations.

We know the misery raves can cause to nearby residents, with loud music keeping people awake for hours on end. It also has a significant impact on livestock and wildlife, and often participants leave the land badly damaged.

We would like to encourage our local communities including farmers and landowners to take pro active pre-emptive measures to help target harden their land and open spaces and secure their property to make it an unattractive option for organisers.

These measures can be as simple as ensuring padlocks on gateways are serviceable, broken fences or open gateways are closed and any buildings are properly secured.

They ask for communities to help further by reporting if they see any of the following signs in the local area:

  • an unusual increase in road traffic in rural areas;
  • social media activity advertising the rave and its location;
  • vehicles carrying sound equipment;
  • anything unusual or out of place (for example: a ribbon or balloon tied in a hedge which could be used as a marker);
  • large gatherings of people in unusual areas at night (for example: farmland, open countryside or abandoned buildings).

If you see these, report by telephoning 101, or if you see organisers setting up equipment call 999.

You can also report anonymously to the charity Crimestoppers via their website or on 0800 555 111

Devon County Teams out gritting the roads

The Devon County Roads and Transport Newsletter of Thursday 8th December 2022 said:

With the arrival of the forecast cold spell, our gritting teams are out in force treating roads on Devon’s primary, secondary and precautionary salting routes.

The remainder of this week is set to be the coldest of this winter so far, with The Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning in the north of the county for the possibility of icy patches, particularly on untreated surfaces, and there is the risk of wintry showers on higher ground.

And with road temperatures across the county expected to drop below zero, any water run-off from adjacent land could freeze and lead to icy patches, especially on untreated roads.

The primary salting network only covers about 20 per cent of Devon’s roads, so 80 per cent are untreated; rain will wash salt off roads leaving them prone to ice and in extreme cold even salting will not stop ice forming.

What you can do to help

  • Braking distances can be doubled in wet conditions, and multiplied by 10 on snow or ice, so reduce your speed and leave more distance between you and the car in front;
  • the county provides more than 3,500 grit bins in areas not included in the primary salting network, which you can use to help you keep your roads and pavements free of ice;
  • 325 volunteer snow wardens treat priority routes during spells of severe weather;
  • report any problems on the roads using the Web Reporting Tool
  • if you are reporting an emergency on the highway that requires immediate attention (something that is very likely to present an imminent threat to life or serious injury or serious damage to property), please call the County team on 0345 155 1004.
  • National Highways look after the M5 motorway and trunk roads in Devon – they can be contacted on 0300 123 5000.

Free School Meal Holiday Vouchers

From Devon County Council:

Families to receive help to buy food during school holidays

Families in Devon on low incomes, whose children receive free school meals, will get support this winter to help them buy food during the school holidays.

Once again, we’re providing holiday food vouchers for children and young people who are eligible for benefit-related free school meals.

If you have children at school and your financial circumstances have changed, your children may be eligible for free school meals.

You can find out by applying online through our Devon Citizen’s Portal.

The deadline for applications, in order to receive free school meal holiday vouchers for the Christmas school holiday, is Friday 16 December, so please apply as soon as possible.

Before the end of this term, we’ll be sending eligible families free school meal holiday vouchers to cover both the Christmas and February 2023 half-term holidays at the same time. That’s to give families more flexibility to prioritise and budget their winter food expenditure themselves.

Vouchers can be used at the following supermarkets: Aldi, Iceland, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Asda, Waitrose and M&S Food.
